Solid wood table tops are one of the most popular choices for many food service operators. When considering a solid wood top, be sure the final finish is a lab grade that will hold up to heavy wear and constant cleaning and sanitizing. Although any solid wood finish will eventually wear, solid wood can be refinished and offer years of additional service.
It is interesting to note when considering wood, that because it is a natural product it can expand and contract due to changes in temperature and humidity. This may cause table tops to split if the temperature varies too much.

Wood veneers can provide more design options than solid wood while still providing that real wood surface. Unlike solid woods, though, veneers cannot be effectively refinished.
Neither solid wood or wood veneers are scratch proof, but some commercial finishes are extremely tough and resistant to scratching. Some solid wood table top manufacturers offer warranties on their proprietary finishes.
Like residential counter tops, granite, marble, and stone veneer or tile are sometimes used for commercial table tops.
