The FBI has recently been warning ā ļø about the use of public USB chargers due to the threat of ājuice jackingā. For those who donāt know what juice jacking is, it is a cyberattack where a public USB charging port is used to steal data or install malware onto a device.
How does this happen? Well, USB has been primarily developed as a data transfer interface and for this reason provides access to file systems via OS. This makes it incredibly compelling for thieves to try and access user data with malicious attempts!
Qi wireless charging was developed chiefly for power transfer and related information; transfer and data structures are limited to power transfer and related safety features. You CANNOT access user information or upload malicious files via Qi!
Qi Certified chargers contain no direct interface into the device being charged and therefore are an incredibly safe way to charge in a public setting. Further, the new Qi2 standard comes with additional security benefits such as secure authentication and precision alignment, to name a few.
While you might want to think twice about charging with a public USB charger, you do not have to think twice before you set your phone down on a Qi Certified wireless charger. Juice jacking will NOT occur when you opt for the latter.ā
