Staying Balanced – A Guide To Keeping Your Restaurant Furniture In Balance.

All types of words have been used to describe the times we live in. One might say with all the uncertainty of supply chain, inflation, Covid cases, things are out of balance.
Most of these things are beyond our control, but if there are things we can fix, we should.

THE DREADED WOBBLY TABLE SYNDROME

For instance, take wobbly tables and chairs in a restaurant or bar…… nobody likes to sit in a chair or stool that moves every time they do. Also, it is beyond annoying to have the table you are seated at move whenever you so much as touch it.

BRINGING YOUR RESTAURANT FURNITURE BACK INTO BALANCE

There are only a few reasons restaurant furniture might not be level. Here are a few of the most common reasons:

Uneven Surfaces

One of the major causes can be uneven surfaces. This is especially true in older buildings and seems to affect tables more than seating. After confirming the table base’s glides are intact and unbroken, using a level on the floor where the table is located, is the first step. A level of at least 36” will give you the best indication if the floor is the cause of the balance issues. Most standard table base glides have a certain degree of adjustability, but if this is not enough to fix the issue, there are several self -leveling base glides and leveling systems available that will most likely resolve the problem. Switching from a cross style base to one that is a solid square or rectangle base might also work.

Missing or Damaged Glides

Seating imbalance is less common than tables and here, the most common issue is missing, worn, or damaged glides. Glides should be inspected regularly, not only to insure patron comfort, put also to avoid damaging floors. It is a good idea to keep replacement glides on hand.

Uneven Legs

On a rare occasion, the imbalance can be caused by uneven leg lengths on the chair or stool. This issue will usually be noticed immediately upon putting new product into use and is a repair that most manufacturers will handle under warranty. It will most likely require that you first rule out any other causes for the problem and then returning to the factory for repair, but again, this is an extremely rare occurrence.

So in totally out of kilter times, keeping our tables and chairs in balance is a good idea, simple to do, and can affect the dining experience in a big way. Bon Appétit!
